Gunmen invade Kogi school, abduct principal, NECO official and students during exam

Gunmen invaded Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State and abducted the school principal, a NECO ad hoc staff member and four students while the victims were writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed that the attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, throwing the school into panic as the assailants whisked away six people.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command's spokesperson, ASP Salisu Oyiza, said security operatives immediately launched a rescue operation following the incident.

"During the incident, four students, the school principal and one NECO ad hoc staff member were abducted by the attackers.

"A combined team of the police and other security agencies immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation and is currently on the trail of the assailants. So far, one of the abducted students has been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators," the statement read.

The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, alongside the Brigade Commander and the Kogi State Security Adviser, were on their way to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment of the attack.

Security agencies said efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims unharmed and bring those responsible for the abduction to justice.
